WORLD’S EMERGING FILMMAKERS TAKE TOP HONORS
Next Reel International Film Festival brought 40 filmmakers
from 17 countries to Singapore

SINGAPORE – 12 February 2010
Over a five-day span, 2,000 Singaporeans filled the Cathay Cineplex to get a glimpse of the world’s emerging filmmakers. And on the closing night of the 2010 Next Reel International Film Festival hosted by New York University Tisch School of the Arts, films from Germany, Finland, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Slovenia, Singapore and the United States took the top awards and $30,000 USD in cash prizes.

First Place/ Filmmakers’ Choice Award - Shoresh & Shirin directed by Katrin Gebbe from the Hamburg Media School in Germany earned a $10,000 USD. Gabbe also won the Filmmaker's Choice Award voted on by the filmmakers. She earned an additional $3,000 USD award.

Second Place - Truth or Dare directed by Mikko Kuparinen from the University of Art and Design Helsinki in Finland earned $7,000 USD.

Third Place - Playing Marbles directed by Dimitar Dimitrov from the National Academy of Theatre & Film Arts in Bulgaria earned $5,000 USD.

Other films receiving recognition from the international jury of film professionals included:

Best Documentary - Nutkin’s Last Stand, directed by Nicholas Berger from Stanford University in the United States received $2,500 USD.

Best Animation – Two films tied: Alfonzo’s Fly, directed by Peter Budinsky from the Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Slovakia. Budinsky received a $1,250 USD cash award. Chump & Clump by Michael Herm and Stephan Sacher from Germany’s Konrad Wolf school received $1,250 USD.

Honorable Mention in Documentary – Under a Storybook Sky, directed by May Lin Au Yong, a Singaporean, who studied at Stanford University in the United States. She received a $625 USD cash award.

Honorable Mention in Narrative – Hair Extension, directed by Barbara Zemljic, from Slovenia’s University of Ljublijana. She received a $625 USD cash award.

Highlights from the week included the opening screening of Oliver Stone’s Comandante. Stone was on hand for a Q&A following the screening. Workshops were held on animation, screen writing, and filmmaking. An opening party was held at NYU Tisch School of the Arts Asia, and the closing night was celebrated at the Singapore Art Museum.
