OLIVER STONE KICKS OFF NEXT REEL FILM FESTIVAL
Festival Returns to Singapore for Second Time and Features 98 Films from 25 Countries
SINGAPORE – 13 January 2010 Oliver Stone, the Academy Award winning filmmaker, will open the ninth Next Reel International Film Festival hosted by New York University Tisch School of the Arts, Sunday, 31 January 2010. A screening of his documentary Comandante will be held followed by a Q&A with the audience.
The Next Reel International Film Festival, which runs daily from 4 p.m. to 12 a.m., 31 January – 5 February 2010, is a biennial festival that showcases the work of the best emerging filmmakers from around the world. All screenings will be held at The Cathay Cineplex.
The 2010 festival features 98 films from 25 countries, including Argentina, Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Cuba, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong SAR, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden, The Netherlands, United Kingdom, United States of America, and Uruguay. A select panel of professional filmmakers will serve on the jury to award the $30,000 USD in prizes.
“The Next Reel International Film Festival has grown to become an international platform through which young filmmakers interact, exchange, learn, collaborate and compete. We are so honored that Oliver Stone has so generously agreed to open the festival and to spend time with these young filmmakers from around the world,” said Pari Sara Shirazi, Ph.D., festival founder and president of New York University Tisch School of the Arts Asia. “I also hope that the festival will help in showcasing the conducive environment Singapore has for creating and making film.”
The opportunity to network with other filmmakers is at the core of this festival. Tisch School of the Arts alumni working in the region will attend. In addition to daily screenings, professional workshops will be held at Tisch School of the Arts Asia on animation in Southeast Asia, screenwriting, and the art of developing a pitch for the film industry. A screening of the winning films from the Democracy Video Challenge, a new effort supported by a unique partnership comprised of democracy and youth organizations, the film and entertainment industry, academia, and the U.S. government, will be held exclusively at Tisch School of the Arts Asia.
A special feature screening of For Real by Sona Jain, 2005 Tisch School of the Arts alumna, will be held at 6 p.m., Thursday, 4 February 2010. Jain’s film won four awards at the Asian Festival of First Films in Singapore in December 2009.
Awards will be announced at 5 p.m., Friday, 5 February in a ceremony at The Cathay Cineplex. A private dinner will follow at the Singapore Art Museum.
Next Reel, founded by New York University Tisch School of the Arts, is partially sponsored by The Cathay and Rendezvous Hotel Singapore.
